Background of the Study

Workload is one of the primary factors that influence the efficiency and quality of care provided by nurses. An excessive workload can lead to fatigue, burnout, and decreased job satisfaction, ultimately impairing the quality of patient care (Bello et al., 2024). On the other hand, a manageable workload can improve nurses' efficiency, enhance patient care, and promote job satisfaction (Adebayo & Musa, 2024). At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, nurses frequently experience high workloads, especially in critical care and emergency departments, which may affect their performance and patient outcomes.

The impact of workload on nurse efficiency has been widely studied, but the specific conditions at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital require focused attention. This study aims to evaluate how workload affects the efficiency of nurses at the hospital, examining whether the current staffing and workload distribution are sustainable for optimal care delivery.

Statement of the Problem

The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, like many other healthcare facilities, faces staffing shortages that contribute to high nurse-patient ratios and increased workload. This may lead to decreased efficiency, longer patient waiting times, and a higher likelihood of clinical errors (Aliyu & Salisu, 2023). Despite the critical importance of workload management, there is insufficient research on how it directly impacts nurse efficiency at this institution. This study seeks to fill that gap and provide evidence-based recommendations for improving workload distribution and enhancing nurse performance.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of workload on nurse efficiency at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
  2. To examine how workload affects patient care and nurse performance.
  3. To recommend strategies for managing nurse workload to improve efficiency and care delivery.

Research Questions

  1. How does workload affect the efficiency of nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital?
  2. What is the relationship between nurse workload and patient care quality?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to manage nurse workload and improve efficiency?

Research Hypotheses

  1. High workload negatively impacts nurse efficiency and patient care.
  2. Reducing nurse workload will lead to improvements in nurse efficiency and overall care quality.
  3. Effective workload management strategies can improve nurse performance at the hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the relationship between workload and nurse efficiency at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include variability in workload levels across departments and the subjective nature of efficiency measurement.

Definitions of Terms

  • Workload: The total amount of work assigned to a nurse in a given period, including patient care responsibilities, administrative tasks, and other duties.
  • Efficiency: The ability of nurses to provide high-quality care within a reasonable timeframe and with available resources.
  • Burnout: A state of physical and emotional exhaustion caused by excessive work demands.
  • Patient Care Quality: The standard of care provided to patients, including aspects such as safety, communication, and treatment effectiveness.
